Knowledge
technology (KT) simply refers to Technology that adds a layer of
intelligence to information technology, to filter appropriate information and
deliver it when it is needed. The elective knowledge technology module builds on the component of
Waste Management delivered in the core Environmental Engineering module, the
aim of which is to provide an introduction to civil engineers of the underlying
principles that guide waste management practice.
This
paper aims to provide detailed knowledge and skills in the management,
treatment, disposal and recycling options for solid wastes and the role
resource efficiency plays in conserving resources and
contributing to a low
carbon economy, while focusing on key engineering and technical aspects
involved. Understanding of the basic principles of waste and resource
management will be supplemented, where appropriate, by practical
problem-solving exercises in the context of knowledge technology.
