GST 122: green cloud computing: a technology for environmental sustainability and energy efficiency

2014 2nd semester GST 122 TERM PAPER - Science and Basic Technology; University of Uyo, Uyo.

Question 6:
green cloud computing: a technology for environmental sustainability and energy efficiency.

Abstract
Unprecedented economies of scale reduce overall cost and increase environmental sustainability as well as energy efficiencies, especially when replacing an organization’s locally operated on-premise servers. This invariably is of great
advantage, translating to environmental benefits in the long run. The argument therefore lies in accessing the viability of green cloud computing: as a technology for environmental sustainability and energy efficiency.

Green Cloud computing—large-scale, shared IT infrastructure available over the internet—is transforming the way corporate IT services are delivered and managed.
To assess the environmental sustainability as well as energy efficiency impact of cloud computing, modern IT companies have risen to the issues—to compare the energy use and carbon footprint of cloud offerings for businesses with corresponding  on-premise deployments in view of the deployment of green cloud computing: a technology for environmental sustainability and energy efficiency.

Both green cloud computing and sustainability are emerging as transformative trends in business and society. Most consumers (whether they are aware of it or not) are already heavy users of cloud-enabled services, including email, social media, online gaming, and many mobile applications. The business community has begun to embrace cloud computing as a viable option to reduce costs and to improve IT and business agility. However, this paper focuses on the applicability of this green cloud computing as a technology for environmental sustainability and energy efficiency.
